A native Londoner arrives at CIAT

Rajiv Ram

Me in Cali

Hi everybody!!! I am a new addition to the CIAT team. My name is Rajiv Ram and just like Ashley, I will be working as a visiting researcher in the DAPA markets program. Here is a little background information about me. I have a BSc (hons) in Geography with Economics from the London School of Economics (LSE) and have recently completed an MSc in Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. My master’s thesis was titled, The Zapatistas and the Agrarian Question of Labour. I am very passionate about pro-poor rural development and describe myself as an agrarian political economist. At CIAT, I am interested in developing frameworks in market linkages, increasing smallholder access to export markets and methods to capture higher value at the producer end of supply chains. My project for now will be to examine how trans-national food companies will compete to be ‘preferred buyers’ in the future.  This is likely to act as stimulus to source from small holders in a pro-development context. I am looking forward to my time at CIAT and life in Cali. If anybody has any questions, please feel free to contact me.

  • Excellent! Welcome Rajiv. Looking forward to hearing more about the competition between trans-national companies for preferred buyer status. Very interesting.
