Ms. Sheri Flies, who won the James Beard Award (the equivalent of the “Oscar” in the food Industry) for her ground breaking work in the sustainable food movement. Ms. Flies presented on responsible agriculture sourcing for better human development outcomes at the World Bank on June 27, 2012. She explained how Costco approached value chain analysis by an original model of local sourcing through market based approaches while including human indicators such as poverty, malnutrition, education and health. Notably, she will talk on how Costco uses a performance contract with green bean growers in Guatemala to invest in improving health, nutrition and education services of the farmers’ communities.
The methods, tools and results presented by Ms. Flies were the result of a collaborative project between Costco, the Cuatro Pinos Coop, LA Salad and the Sustainable Food Lab. The project was designed and implemented by CIAT with additional field assistance from Counterpart International.
