Development of global roads dataset

Last week a panel discussion on geographic information science and technology needs for Africa was held at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers  (AAG) in Seattle, WA.  Part of the discussion included the need for roads data to support accessibility mapping, population studies, transport cost analysis and many other applications related to sustainable development for Africa. As vice-chair of global roads working group, I shared our committee’s efforts to develop a new global roads database.  The effort is part of CODATA, The Committee on Data for Science and Technology.
